Prioritise the first render
Resources required for the Hero and primary content were requested earlier, while non-essential execution moved to a more appropriate moment.
More than doubled traffic and a dramatic Performance improvement for a luxury castle hotel in Ireland.
Ballynahinch Castle Hotel is a historic luxury property in Connemara, western Ireland, combining heritage, untouched landscapes and an exceptional stay for guests from Ireland, the UK and international markets.
Smartcognis was responsible for improving the site’s technical performance, strengthening Core Web Vitals and growing organic visibility for searches around castle hotels, boutique hotels and luxury stays. Performance increased from 34 to 98, traffic more than doubled and a set of high-value hotel queries reached the Top 3 in the UK and Ireland-related search market.
The site was custom-built, with no standard CMS or plugin ecosystem available. Hero images, render-blocking resources, custom fonts and booking components delayed the first meaningful view and caused layout movement during load.
| Metric | Starting point | After optimisation |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | 34 / 100 | 98 / 100 |
| LCP | 23 | 99 |
| TBT | 18 | 100 |
| CLS | Very poor | 0 |
Critical resources were prioritised, above-the-fold loading was redesigned, blocking work was reduced and element dimensions were stabilised to remove layout shifts.
Resources required for the Hero and primary content were requested earlier, while non-essential execution moved to a more appropriate moment.
Users could scroll, open the menu and follow the rooms and booking journey sooner, especially on mobile connections.
Images, fonts, sliders and booking elements were given predictable space so the page remained visually stable while loading.
Rather than imitate Booking.com or TripAdvisor, the official hotel site focused on the advantages only the property could own: first-hand room detail, guest experience, castle heritage and credible destination information.
Smartcognis worked with John, the project’s technical lead, and the group CEO through email, Google Meet and Trello. Each recommendation documented the issue, root cause, implementation detail and post-release validation method.
Identify a technical issue or search opportunity and isolate its root cause.
Use an online session, an explanatory video and a Trello task to move from recommendation to release.
Review the live outcome in Performance and Search tools after each change was published.
The combination of technical improvements, experience-led content and Local SEO moved the site from a digital brochure to a trusted resource for planning a Connemara stay.
The overall score rose from 34 to 98, with LCP reaching 99, TBT reaching 100 and CLS reaching zero.
Site traffic more than doubled as the brand became more visible across destination and accommodation searches.
The site reached Top 3 positions for a set of important hotel, boutique-hotel and luxury-stay queries.
This project showed that Performance, Local SEO and experience-led content are not separate workstreams. When the site is fast, stable and authoritative, the premium identity is communicated more effectively and users move towards direct booking with greater confidence.
The partnership began through LinkedIn and became a practical example of turning Smartcognis technical expertise into measurable international delivery.
